FDA Says BPA In Plastic Bottles Is Safe

We at 3Point have been asked questions about the effect of BPA in plastic water bottles. As bright as we are at creating unique and creative brand promotion solutions… scientists we are not. There has always been conflicting information on this. Further testing has been done by the FDA, here is what they found:

The chemical bisphenol A (BPA) that is found in plastic water bottles, baby bottles, canned food and other products is safe, according to a new report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released on Friday. The study found that the trace amounts of the chemical that leech into food and liquid are not dangerous to adults or infants, though the FDA did leave open the need for further testing. Stan Breckenridge, senior vice president of Moderne Glass Co. Inc. (asi/71920, which created a BPA-free kit of five different bottle styles in reaction to safety concerns, hopes the new report will finally clear the air. “I think it alleviates the paranoia that was caused by the sensationalized news reports,” he says. “I think it instills consumer confidence back into the products. The FDA in my opinion is as credible a source as it gets and we stand behind.”

The new FDA report was prompted by the findings by the National Toxicology Program that found “some concern” about BPA effects on infants. The report was picked up by the Today Show in April, kicking off a wave of concern among consumers and the industry as to the safety of certain plastic bottles made with BPA. Industry suppliers denied there were any safety concerns, calling them overblown, but many began offering BPA-free bottles to worried distributors.

One of those suppliers was Garyline (asi/55990, a domestic manufacturer which stopped offering water bottles made with BPA altogether and shed any it had in its inventory. “Knowing the regulations and testing it went through, I felt BPA was safe,” says Garry Hellinger, CEO. “But after hearing the Today Show, the people we sell to and their clients became extremely concerned. So we had to go along with what customers were asking us. It was good that the FDA did the new study. It might eliminate some litigious people. We’re just going along with what our customers feel is important to them. Our customers are who run our business and I think we all know that.”

How the new report will affect California’s proposed bill requiring that all products or food containers used by children three years and younger contain only trace amounts of BPA is still to be determined. The measure has been passed by the state senate and is awaiting a vote in the assembly. No matter how the vote goes, the damage may already be done to any products that contain BPA, says Breckenridge. “I just did a show and the people weren’t aware of the finding of the FDA. They were only aware of the original report and had an alarmist attitude. I hope that California sees the recent findings and realizes we don’t need another regulation that would proliferate.”

Why Do You Want to Start a Company Store?

AfstoreThere are quite a few reasons. Most marketing managers want an easier way to manage branded assets to their colleagues. (”Colleagues” can take on many forms: coworkers, employees, dealers, franchises, brokers, agents, representatives … whomever needs to utilize your branded products). Ultimately, it is about brand control, speed, purchase savings and convenience.

However, most stores are actually created as a reaction to a particular “pain point” involving one or two specific areas. Often, an entire store gets built around managing the most difficult, immediate problem. This makes sense, right? What you may not realize is that many store solutions can accomplish much more than what they are originally intended, but most stores are initially created because:

  • brand abuse is out of control; no system of protection for the brand
  • apparel is messy - requires to much administration
  • printed collateral is growing increasingly complex
  • branded materials are not getting into the hands that need them, quick enough
  • inventory is a nightmare
  • no one knows where to find all our materials - accessibility is poor
  • accountability for purchasing: we need a system to manage purchases
  • we’ve tried it ourselves, consumes too much energy
  • our products are fragmented, no central area to find all branded items
  • duplication of energies across the entire organization to purchase and handle branded products
If you are thinking of starting a Company Store or improving an existing one, qualifying the “why” will help you concentrate on not only solving those particular problems, but solving multiple problems at the same time. Take a moment to consider the above options for your store and pinpoint your “why” or, better yet, number these in order of priority. This is “Step One” toward building the most robust store for simplifying all of your branded materials.

Promo Products’ Impact on Brand/Company Image

Promotional Products’ Impact On Brand/Company Image

Published by: Promotional Products Association International

An Experimental Study

Brand Image:

The impressions consumers have of a company extend well beyond the product or service the ?rm provides. Brand image is a mental image that re?ects the way a brand is perceived, including all the identifying elements, the product or company personality, and the emotions and associations evoked in the consumer’s mind.

Objective:

The study was designed to determine the impact promotional products have on recipients and its long-term effects.

Methodology:

This study was conducted by Georgia Southern University using an experimental design. The participants, who were students at the university, were divided into two groups. After completing a pre-test, the experimental group received an imprinted promotional product that re?ected the company’s image. The control group received nothing. A post-test survey, conducted approximately a month later, asked questions to determine the groups’ image of the company. The results of this study are based on a sample size of 647 completed pre-test surveys and 538 completed post-test surveys. For the study, the researchers selected, as the test company, a restaurant located in a college town a few miles from a university campus.

Overall Image

Promotional product recipients held a more positive image of the company than the non-recipients. On scale of 1 to 7 with 7 representing a positive image, both groups were above the neutral score of 4 for four out of ?ve categories. Although the differences are within a similar range in the ?gure below, they are statistically signi?cant.

Perception Of The Business

The group receiving the promotional product had a more positive image as evidenced in their comments about the company than the non-recipient control group. The difference was statistically signi?cant.

Likelihood Of Recommending The Business

The group receiving the promotional product was signi?cantly more likely to recommend the business to others than the group that received nothing.

In A Nutshell:

Promotional Products have a positive impact on brand image. Speci?cally, when comparing people who receive a promotional product from a company with others who do not, this research shows that people who receive a promotional product have a signi?cantly more positive opinion about a business through:

More positive overall image

More positive perception of the business

Higher likelihood of recommending the business

Higher likelihood of patronization

ROI

The study did not set out to speci?cally measure ROI. However, after the study, the business reported:

10 - 15% increase in sales

5 - 10% increase in new customer group (students)

Opening a second location on the university campus

Impact of Promotional Products… It works!

Promotional Products - Impact, Exposure and Influence: A Survey of Business Travelers at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport (NEW! Just released)

A survey recently conducted for reveals the power of promotional products by measuring how end users respond to organizations that use promotional products as part of their marketing mix.

The survey, Promotional Products - Impact, Exposure and Influence: A Survey of Business Travelers at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport, was conducted by interviewing business travelers at DFW Airport. More than 71 percent of travelers indicated they had received at least one promotional product in the last 12 months.

The study also showed that respondents’ ability to recall the name of an advertiser on a promotional product they had received (76 percent) was much better than their ability to recall the name of an advertiser from a print publication they had read in the past week (53.5 percent).

Thoughts from 3Point

This survey is proof that promotional items work to make a great impact towards a company’s target market. What is critical to remember is that not ALL items make an impact. Many companies waste valuable marketing dollars buying premiums that make no impact and either get immediately thrown away or shoved in the back of a closet. Of course, that is why 3Point is here, to help companies avoid this pitfall. We have the experience, expertise and creative ability to bring our clients the perfect promotional items for their exact needs.

It is human nature for EVERYONE to take ANYTHING for free. The skill is finding a brand management firm that takes the time to learn about the company and its demographics. Learning this information allows us to bring our clients a special premium that separates them from their competition and give them a valuable return on investment like leads, opt-in-database information, converted sales, opening new accounts, etc.

So do what companies like Unitus Community Credit Union, American Family Insurance, Warn Industries, and many others do -They trust us, 3Point, to provide world class service and great creative ideas that produce outstanding results.
